Classical context

Traditional Ayurvedic Perspective

In classical Ayurvedic practice, Shirodhara is associated with traditional head therapies and individualised care based on Dosha, Prakriti and a person's condition. It is commonly considered for relaxation and general well-being. Individual experiences vary, and Shirodhara should not replace appropriate medical assessment or treatment.

This section describes traditional Ayurvedic use. Traditional use alone does not establish clinical effectiveness. Your physician can discuss the available evidence, suitability and how the treatment fits with your medical care.

Your care pathway

Before, during and afterwards.

A procedure follows assessment. Preparation and follow-up are tailored to the person.

  1. Discuss your needs before the session

Share your symptoms, medicines and relevant medical history during screening. A separate routine physician consultation is not required; physician assessment is arranged when clinically indicated. When booking, ask how much time to allow and whether any preparation is needed.

  2. Abhyangam, followed by Shirodhara

Your session begins with Abhyangam, followed by Shirodhara while you recline and the selected preparation flows across your forehead. Discuss the oil, massage pressure and treatment areas before starting. Ask for an adjustment if your position or the temperature feels uncomfortable.

  3. Finish with guidance

Before leaving, ask about washing your hair and skin, returning to usual activities and whether any follow-up is needed.

Safety & suitability

What to discuss before proceeding.

  • Before treatment, discuss allergies, scalp or skin irritation, wounds, recent illness, surgery or injury, pregnancy, and medicines that affect bleeding. These details help the team decide whether to proceed, adjust the session or arrange physician assessment; they are not automatic exclusions. Natural ingredients can still cause reactions.
  • Report pain, burning, eye irritation, dizziness, faintness or a rash immediately so the procedure can be paused and assessed. Take care when standing, as oil may make surfaces slippery.

Patient questions

Questions before your session

Can Shirodhara help with sleep?

Some people describe Shirodhara as relaxing. It is not established as a treatment for sleep disorders. If sleep problems persist, discuss them with a healthcare professional.

Which preparation will be used?

The clinic uses medicated oil (Taila Dhara), buttermilk (Takra) and milk-based preparations (Ksheera Dhara). The physician selects a suitable preparation according to your condition and Ayurvedic assessment. Tell the team about any relevant allergies or sensitivities.

Can I book Shirodhara directly?

Yes. Call or WhatsApp the clinic to request a Shirodhara session. A routine separate physician consultation is not required. Suitability screening still applies, with physician assessment when indicated. Your appointment is confirmed only when the clinic confirms it directly.
